Quarterly Monitoring and Evaluation Exercise for Mediation Kicks Off
(Standing); Hon. Lady Justice Joyce Kavuma

The Mediation Registry kicked off its quarterly monitoring and evaluation exercise in different courts around the country to assess the performance of Mediation, find the challenges and share best practices.

The exercise kicked off at Mbarara High Court where the Senior Resident Judge, Hon. Lady Justice Joyce Kavuma appreciated the efforts made by the Registry to keep track of the performance of the Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanism. She however expressed concern over lack of office space for mediators and little facilitation. "Can't we find containers and turn them into office space," she asked.

She noted the need for a serene working environment for Mediators while mediating over disputes.

The Judge went on to commend the efforts of the Mediators especially Mr Hamudan Kiggundu Mugerwa for the job well done in spite of challenges such as inadequate facilitation.

The meeting was attended by a cross-section of Judicial Officers in the Circuit with the Ag Deputy Registrar Mbarara, HW Samuel Twakire moderating.

Some of the issues that were pointed out included poor facilitation, lack of training for mediators, lack of office space, limited public awareness, and the need for accreditation of trained mediators.

HW Dr Agnes Nkonge the Deputy Registrar, Mediation reassured the mediators that all their concerns had been noted and will be addressed.
